SOUTHERN NATIONAL NAMES HOUGH TO HEAD CORPORATE BANKING

 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern National Corporation (NYSE: SNB) today named banking executive and former Winston- Salem resident C. Royce Hough as executive vice president of its Corporate Banking and New Product Development division. Hough, with 30 years of banking experience, will direct Southern National's corporate banking activities as a member of the bank's senior management team.
 Hough, 55, joins Southern National from Dominion Bankshares Corporation (now First Union National Bank of Virginia) of Roanoke, Va. where he was executive vice president of corporate banking. He managed not only corporate banking, but commercial real estate finance, business banking, specialized industries, cash management and international trade services.
 As executive vice president with Barnett Banks, Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla., from 1983 to 1991, Hough headed divisions in corporate credit policy and administration, and corporate and international banking.
 "Royce adds tremendous depth and experience to our management team," said Southern National Chairman Glenn Orr. "We are very fortunate and pleased to have a person with his background and expertise join our organization."
 Hough began his banking career in Winston-Salem with Wachovia in 1963 as a commercial bank trainee and remained in the Twin City until 1983 when he joined Barnett Banks in Florida.

 A native of Washington, D.C., Hough holds a bachelor's degree in commerce and economics from Washington and Lee University of Lexington, Va., and a Master in Business Administration in finance from Cornell University of Ithaca, NY.
