SOUTHERN NATIONAL INCREASES DIVIDEND RATE FOR 21ST CONSECUTIVE YEAR

 LUMBERTON, N.C., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern National Corporation (NYSE: SNB) today announced that its Board of Directors has approved a 15 percent increase in its quarterly dividend rate from $.13 to $.15 per share. This marks the 21st consecutive year in which Southern National has increased its dividend rate. The increase is effective for shareholders of record on Jan. 15, 1993 and is payable on Feb. 1, 1993. The dividend rate was last increased in July 1992, from $.12 to $.13 per share.
 Southern National anticipates the release of 1992 earnings on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1993 and expects that the earnings figure will be consistent with estimates made previously by bank stock analysts.
