SOUTHERN LIVING BECOMES OLYMPIC SPONSOR

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Living magazine, for the first time ever, will jointly participate with Time Inc. as an official worldwide sponsor of TOP, The Olympic Program.
Southern Living, published by Birmingham-based Southern Progress Corp., a subsidiary of Time Inc. Ventures, joins three Time Inc. magazines -- Sports Illustrated, Time International and Sports Illustrated for Kids -- in sponsoring the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway, and the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.
The 1996 Centennial Olympic Games will mark the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympiad.
"We're very happy to join three outstanding Time Inc. magazines in sponsoring the Olympics," said Jim Nelson, president and chief executive officer of Southern Progress. "Bud Flora, who is a senior vice president for travel and tourism at Southern Progress, will direct Olympic programs for Southern Living. Naturally, since the south is our area of expertise, we'll be focusing our efforts on the Atlanta Games. Most importantly, our involvement as a sponsor will enable us to provide advertisers with some unique opportunities to reach the Southern market."
Southern Living can offer a unique perspective on significant Southern people and places surrounding the Atlanta Games, said editor John Floyd. Tentative editorial plans, he added, include a series of articles saluting Southern Olympic hopefuls and a possible Southern Living Travel Guide with an Olympic focus.
"Southern Living is the part of our company that knows more about the South than anybody else," said Sports Illustrated Associate Publisher Tom Hickey, who is directing Olympic efforts for Time Inc. "With the Centennial Games being held in Atlanta, we're especially glad to have Southern Living on board as a partner."
Southern Living and its headquarters city share a special interest in the Centennial Games. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) recently announced that Birmingham has been chosen as one of four host cities for the preliminary competition in football (soccer).
The largest regional magazine in the country, Southern Living is the flagship of Southern Progress, which also publishes Progressive Farmer, Cooking Light and Southern Accents magazines, as well as Oxmoor House books. Southern Progress is the largest regional publisher of magazines and books in the U.S.
