SOUTHERN INDIANA GAS & ELECTRIC FILES NATURAL GAS RATE CASE

EVANSVILLE, Ind., Nov. 19 ~PRNewswire~ -- On Nov. 18, 1992, Southern Indiana Gas and Electric Company (NYSE: SIG) (SIGECO) filed a petition with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission requesting a general adjustment in rates for natural gas customers. The last general natural gas rate case filed by SIGECO occurred in 1982. The last rate filing by the company's Hoosier Division (previously Hoosier Gas Company before the acquisition by SIGECO in 1988) was in 1984.
In a recent rate comparison by the American Gas Association, SIGECO's residential rates (excluding rates for its Hoosier Division) ranked second lowest out of 133 utilities nationwide.
Although the filing does not include specific numbers, SIGECO estimates the increase in natural gas rates for the overall group of customers will be in the range of 15 to 20 percent. The amount of the increase could be higher or lower for individual rate classes (residential, commercial or industrial) based on the cost of serving each particular customer class. Specific numbers will be determined after the commission establishes a test year. A "test year" is a 12- month operating period used to evaluate the company's cost of providing service.
The proposed changes in natural gas rates will not be implemented this winter. The regulatory proceedings which have historically required more than six months before a decision is rendered, are expected to conclude in the second half of 1993.
