SOUTHERN COMPANY SERVICES NAMES NEW PRESIDENT

 ATLANTA, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Paul J. DeNicola has been named president and chief executive officer of Southern Company Services, and Bill M. Guthrie has been named senior executive vice president of Southern Company Services, with responsibility for the company's Birmingham operations, Southern Company President Edward L. Addison announced today.
 Southern Company Services provides technical and specialized services to The Southern Company (NYSE: SO) and its other subsidiaries -- Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power, Savannah Electric, Southern Electric International and Southern Nuclear. The Southern Company's common stock is one of the 20 most widely held corporate stocks in America.
 DeNicola, 44, succeeds H. Allen Franklin, who has been named president of Georgia Power.
 DeNicola will retain his current position of executive vice president and group executive of The Southern Company.
 The appointments are effective Jan. 1.
 "Paul DeNicola has been responsible for nearly every phase of operations in our system during his 26 years with The Southern Company," Addison said. "Under his leadership, I'm certain that Southern Company Services will continue to provide world-class service to all our companies."
 As group executive of The Southern Company, DeNicola is responsible for the operations of Gulf Power, Mississippi Power and Savannah Electric and is a member of the boards of directors of those companies. He also is a director of Southern Company Services and The Southern Company.
 DeNicola began his career with The Southern Company as a junior engineer with Mississippi Power in Gulfport. He gained experience in a number of engineering and management positions before being named assistant to the president of The Southern Company in 1987. Two years later, he returned to Mississippi Power as president and chief executive officer. He was named to his current position in 1991.
 A native of Gulfport, Miss., DeNicola received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Mississippi State University. He serves on the board of trustees of the Scottish Rite Children's Medical Center in Atlanta and of Berry College in Rome, and he has served as a director of the Mississippi Business Roundtable, the Business and Industry Political Education Committee, and the Mississippi Economic Council.
 Guthrie, 60, will retain his current position of chief production officer for The Southern Company, responsible for the company's non- nuclear power generation operations.
 Guthrie joined The Southern Company in 1951 as a co-op student at Alabama Power's Gorgas Steam Plant. He served in numerous engineering and management positions, including vice president for materials services and vice president for operations services at Alabama Power, executive vice president of Gulf Power, senior vice president at Southern Company Services, and executive vice president of Alabama Power. He was named chief production officer for The Southern Company in 1991. He also is a member of Alabama Power's board of directors.
 A native of Townley, Ala., Guthrie received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University. He serves on the Auburn Research Advisory Council, the External Advisory Council at the University of Alabama, and the Engineering Council of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a Sustaining Member of the Boy Scouts of America.
