SOUTHERN COMPANY ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF NEW SUBSIDIARY

ATLANTA, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Southern Company (NYSE: SO) today announced plans to form a new subsidiary -- Southern Communications Services Inc. -- to provide wireless communications services for its five electric utilities and market the excess capacity to others in the states served by The Southern Company.
The new subsidiary -- which is subject to government regulatory approval -- will develop a digital, wireless communications network to improve service to utility customers, enhance communications for government agencies and improve coordination among them in emergencies, and hold down communications costs.
 W. Roy Barron has been named president of the new subsidiary.
The Southern Company is the parent firm of five electric utilities: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power and Savannah Electric. The Southern Company's common stock is one of the 20 most widely held corporate stocks in America.
"Until now, each of our utility companies has maintained its own mobile radio system, which we use in conducting regular business and in restoring service during storms and other emergencies," Southern Company Executive Vice President Paul DeNicola said.
"We need a compatible and coordinated radio system to effectively communicate when we move crews from one state or area to another," he said. "This will improve our efficiency and ultimately provide better service to our customers."
The new mobile radio communications system, scheduled for service beginning in 1994, would cover the states of Alabama and Georgia and portions of Florida and Mississippi.
The proposed wide-area, seamless network will offer integrated voice and data services in the 800-megahertz frequency band. In addition, the Federal Communications Commission recently has proposed new regulations and policies that would encourage the use of the 800-megahertz band to meet the expanding demand for radio service.
Barron, 58, has been serving as general manager, corporate services, at Southern Nuclear Operating Co., another subsidiary of The Southern Company.
Barron joined The Southern Company in 1956 as a junior engineer in Alabama Power's Eufaula District, and had held a number of engineering and management positions at Alabama Power, Southern Nuclear, and Southern Company Services. He holds an engineering degree from Auburn University.
"We will market the use of our system's additional capacity to organizations such as government agencies and commercial and industrial users," Barron said.
"We hope that by encouraging the government agencies and other large users to utilize our system, we will achieve economies of scale that will keep costs down for our utility customers," he said. "By using our networks, these organizations will save a substantial amount of money by avoiding the costs of developing duplicate systems."
