SOUTHERN COMPANY ANNOUNCES ENERLINK AGREEMENT

 ATLANTA, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Southern Company (NYSE: SO) today announced an agreement with Schlumberger Industries Inc., Electricity Division, that will enable customers of The Southern Company's EnerLink product to communicate with Schlumberger electric meters.
 The agreement will ensure that all EnerLink products are compatible with Schlumberger Industries' extensive line of electric metering equipment while preserving the existing security access and metering integrity.
 The Southern Company is the parent firm of five electric utilities: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power, and Savannah Electric. The Southern Company's common stock is one of the 20 most widely held corporate stocks in America.
 Schlumberger Industries, Inc. Electricity Division, an international, diversified company based in Atlanta, is one of the leading manufacturers of energy measurement products.
 EnerLink, a new service of The Southern Company, is a computer-based system that allows large commercial and industrial customers to track their energy costs on a real-time basis.
 EnerLink is marketed to electric utilities that, in turn, market the product line as a value-added service to their large customers.
 EnerLink gives these customers direct access to information in the utility's meter, using standard telephone line, a personal computer, and a modem. In addition, EnerLink provides an extensive collection of data management, report generation, graphics, and cost-analysis tools.
 All five of The Southern Company's electric utilities are active in the EnerLink program.
