SOUTHERN BELL REPAIR CREWS FROM GEORGIA HEADING TO FLORIDA
ATLANTA, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- About 162 Southern Bell employees from Georgia will soon be heading south to help restore telephone service in Florida.
Within the next 24 hours, crews from Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah, Athens, Rome, Macon and Albany will be on the road heading to south Florida, where they will work around the clock with local Southern Bell crews.
The Southern Bell Emergency Restoration Teams in Miami and Jacksonville are assessing the damage and determining where to deploy both local repair crews and the 162 employees being sent to the area from Georgia.
Southern Bell's telecommunications network held up well during the storm, with telephone service remaining operational from the overwhelming majority of the company's customers in the affected areas.
More than 80 percent of the phone cable in the storm area is underground, protecting it from the brunt of the storm. However, high winds, fallen trees and tree limbs, water and debris have damaged some aerial lines between poles and homes or businesses.
These employees are primarily installation, repair, construction and network technicians, along with supervisors and safety personnel.
