SOUTHERN BELL REPAIR CREWS FROM GEORGIA, SOUTH CAROLINA
AND NORTH CAROLINA HEADING TO FLORIDA
ATLANTA, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- About 340 Southern Bell employees from Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina will soon be heading south to help restore telephone service in Florida.
Within the next 24 hours, these crews will be on the road heading to South Florida, where they will work around the clock with local Southern Bell crews.
Southern Bell's telecommunications network held up well during the storm, with telephone service remaining operational for the overwhelming majority of the company's customers.
More than 88 percent of the phone cable in the storm area is underground. However, high winds, fallen trees and tree limbs, water and debris have damaged some aerial lines between poles and homes or businesses.
These employees are primarily installation, repair, construction, and network technicians, along with supervisors and safety personnel. They represent about 5 percent of the plant workforce in their three states.
