SOUTHERN BELL EXPECTS TO PROCESS 85 MILLION MOTHER'S DAY CALLS

ATLANTA, May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Bell expects to process over 85 million calls through its central offices in Georgia as mothers and grandmothers receive calls from their loved ones on Mother's Day.
"Southern Bell normally processes about 43 million calls through its 188 central offices on a non-holiday Sunday. On May 9, we expect to handle twice that amount for Mom's special day," said Carl Swearingen, president of Southern Bell - Georgia.
The increased calling volume includes all local and long distance calls within the state as well as those from outside the state.
"We're glad that Southern Bell will play a small part in making this Mother's Day special. The company's huge investment in Georgia over the past few years to put the majority of our lines underground, install digital offices, and place into use thousands of miles of fiber optics cable has paid off," commented Swearingen.
Southern Bell's powerful network includes a "self-healing" capability. If one element breaks down, another automatically takes over to process the calls. If the telephone network experiences a telephone call "traffic jam," advanced network management capabilities can reroute calls and take other actions to minimize the impact on the company's customers. This whole process happens as fast as the blink of an eye and is transparent to the customer.
Swearingen recommends to call between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to avoid the "Sunday rush."
For Georgia customers who want to call on Mother's Day and save money at the same time, Southern Bell offers a 50 percent discount off the full rate for all calls made before 5 p.m. on Sunday. Southern Bell provides long distance service in Georgia within five geographical Calling Areas. The five areas include calls within Macon, Augusta, Atlanta, Savannah and Albany.
