SOUTHBOUND 405 COMMUTE SIMPLIFIED: NEW CAR-POOL LANE MEANS FASTER COMMUTE FOR TEAM RIDESHARE PARTICIPANTS

LOS ANGELES, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Commuters who join Team Rideshare Thursday will spend less time on the southbound 405 Freeway when the new car-pool lane opens for traffic tomorrow, April 1.
"The new seven-mile High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane on the southbound side of the San Diego Freeway (405), which will run from El Segundo Boulevard to near the Harbor Freeway (110), will provide ridesharers with a time-saving alternative for traveling to work," said Caltrans District 7 Director Jerry B. Baxter.
"We saw an immediate improvement in freeway speeds in all lanes of the westbound 91 Freeway when the 10.5-mile car-pool lane opened in March," said Baxter. "Ridesharing has had a significant impact on traffic flow and, as more commuters join the Team Rideshare Thursday effort, we expect to see improved conditions in other locations as well."
Overall, Caltrans has reported a 15 percent increase in Los Angeles County car-pool numbers on monitored freeways, based on historical data.
Commuters interested in finding a rideshare partner are encouraged to join Team Rideshare by calling 800-286-RIDE, which puts commuters in touch with fellow drivers who work and live nearby and have similar work schedules.
Team Rideshare is a multimedia promotional campaign sponsored by Caltrans and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD). Through the Team Rideshare Thursday effort, which began Feb. 18, Caltrans and the AQMD hope to encourage enough commuters to rideshare that, by the end of 10 weeks, drivers will experience a noticeable improvement in Thursday's traffic conditions.
