SOUTH WALES FOOD & DRINK AWARDS 2013/14.

O'SHEAS 1 Western Arcade, Barry Island CF62 5TQ - 01446 734307 THERE'S something very special about fish and chips at the seaside and a visit to O'Sheas on a sunny October afternoon made it a wonderful visit to the coast.

With a great view over the beach and sea, O'Sheas is an absolute gem.

As a cafe and takeaway, you can sit inside or outside and enjoy your food or, of course, eat while you stroll along the prom.

Even on a Thursday in the autumn, O'Sheas was doing a great trade when we arrived - and little wonder.

Our freshly cooked small cod and chips were delicious - piping hot, with golden, fluffy chips and tasty, fresh, top quality fish.

It was a generous portion, too, and great value for money.

Small cod and chips - PS4.25 12 High Street, Tonyrefail CF39 8PG - 01443 672 111 IT'S Friday lunchtime and the Crispy Cod is packed.

IT'S not surprising really as over the last five years, this popular Rhondda chip shop has won a fish fryer full of awards for its first class food.

And it's easy to see why. My cod and chips were some of the best I have ever tasted.

Despite the constant stream of hungry customers eager to try out the delights from the vast menu, the team behind the counter work quickly and efficiently to keep the queue moving. So it was not long before I was tucking into a big portion of lovely cod and chips out of a box. The batter was wonderfully crisp and the cod cooked to perfection, with delicious melt-in-the-mouth chunks of white fish. Regular cod and chips - PS5.15 VICTORIA FISH BAR 41 Old Church Road, Whitchurch, CardiffCF14 1AB - 029 2062 5286 ON a cold, dark October night, the bright lights of the Victoria Fish Bar area welcoming sight for the weary - and hungry - customer.

And their fish and chips are very welcoming, too. I'd never been to the Victoria before and was really impressed by what I found - a large, sparkling clean shop, with lots on offer to tempt the customers.

The staff behind the counter were really friendly and chatty and I was soon on my way with a generous portion of cod and chips for a very reasonable and amazing value for money PS3.70.

The fish was really tasty with crispy batter and meaty chunks of cod and the chips were golden and flavoursome.

It was the first time I had visited but it won't be the last.

Small cod and chips - PS3.70 TRECENYDD FISH FACTORY 102 St Cenydd Road, Caerphilly CF83 2TE - 029 2088 2919 THE Trecenydd Fish Factory is the most modern fish and chip shop I have ever seen.

Formerly the Trecenydd Fish Bar, this popular eatery recently underwent a PS120,000 refurbishment and is now super modern but still serves top quality good old fashioned fish and chips.

After ordering my cod as I entered, it wasn't long before I was heading out with a cardboard box of piping hot fish and chips under my arm. The fish was wonderfully white, with tasty flakes of cod and crispy batter. The chips were top notch too, tasty and golden.

The service was as good as the food - friendly, quick, polite and efficient. At PS5.20, the meal was one of the more expensive I have had but it was worth it for the quality of the food.

Cod and chips - PS5.20 YAN'S FISH BAR 182 Whitchurch Road, CardiffCF14 3NB - 029 2062 1692 YAN'S is everything a local chip shop should be - great food, fantastic friendly service and owners who really care about the community they live and work in.

Yan's has been serving top-notch traditional food to the area since 1969 and its commitment to quality is plain for all to see and taste. The staff even know the name of the trawler which caught their fish!

My small cod and chips were cooked fresh and were delicious - the fish perfectly cooked with tasty, crispy batter and fabulous flakes of fish, the chips golden, flavoursome and piping hot.

At PS5.15, the meal cost a little more than at other shops, but the quality and size of the fish and chips made it excellent value.

Small cod and chips - PS5.15 IRENE'S SUPPER BAR 19 Park Crescent, Barry CF62 6HD - 01446 733981 SATURDAY night, it's pitch black and raining cats and dogs.

So imagine my delight at stepping out of the pouring rain into a bustling, brightly-lit chip shop with an aroma of food so wonderful that my mouth began to water.

Irene's was busy but with plenty of professional and polite staff behind the counter, the hungry customers were soon on their way - myself included.

My cod and chips were delicious - perfectly cooked with super tasty white flakes of cod and lots of scrumptious, golden chips.

The PS5.25 cost of my meal was one of the more expensive I have had, but the portions are very generous and the food is top quality.

Cod and chips - PS5.25 ALBANY FISH BAR 18 Albany Road, Roath, CardiffCF24 2RQ - 029 2048 2022 THE Albany Fish Bar was the first chip shop I visited when I arrived in Cardiff 15 years ago and it is as popular now as it was then.

Little wonder that there was a big queue when I went in for small cod and chips (excellent value at PS4) on a Saturday lunchtime.

Despite the shop with its wide-ranging menu being really busy, swift, polite and friendly service meant I was in and out in no time.

While the batter on the cod was not the crispiest - I actually don't like my batter too crispy - the fish was really tasty, meaty and well cooked. The chips were golden and delicious - and there were plenty of them.

Small cod and chips - PS4 SPERONI'S 72 Countisbury Avenue, Llanrumney, Cardiff- 029 2079 6140 THE fish at Speroni's is simply spectacular.

Cooked fresh to order as I entered the shop, my cod was huge, in light, crispy batter with delicious white flakes of fish.

And the chips were tasty, too, and there were lots of them.

The PS5.10 for fish and chips is a little more than at other places but the very generous portions make it excellent value for money.

And Speroni's is much more than just fish and chips with lots more on the menu to tempt the tastebuds.

When I went in on a Saturday lunchtime, the shop was full of customers but the service was quick and efficient and I was soon on my way. Parking right outside is a real bonus, too.

Cod and chips - PS5.10 PENYLAN FISH BAR Colchester Avenue, Penylan, Cardiff- 029 2048 8236 FRIDAY lunchtime and Penylan Fish Bar was busy with hungry customers. But with efficient service in this small but clean and tidy takeaway chip shop, satisfied customers were quickly being served and I was soon munching into fabulous small cod and chips.

The golden batter on my cod was not all that crispy but I don't mind that and the chips were really plump and tasty, with everything nice and hot. And the generous portion made it great value for money at a very reasonable PS4. There's a huge menu on offer with a variety of pies, sausages, fishcakes and chicken as well as a large range of soft drinks. And the off-road parking just outside the shop is a real bonus.

Small cod and chips - PS4 PLASSEY FISH BAR 87 Plassey Street, Penarth CF64 1EP - 029 2070 7101 A GENTLEMAN standing at the counter leaned over to me almost conspiratorially as I waited for my cod and chips at Plassey Fish Bar and said: "Best fish and chips for miles."

Well, while the cod was not quite up there with the best I have tasted (although the batter was pretty good), the chips were top notch - crispy on the outside and fluffy and flavoursome on the inside. There were lots of them, too, making cod and chips at PS4.70 great value for money. There is an extensive menu and the service is quick and efficient. On street parking nearby made it a swift and easy visit.

Cod and chips - PS4.70 TAYLOR'S FISH AND CHIPS 66 Tylacelyn Road, Tonypandy - 01443 442062 PEOPLE travel from miles around to get their fish and chips from Taylor's and it's easy to see why.

It's also easy to see why this traditional chippy won last year's fish and chip shop category.

Taylor's lets its food do the talking with delicious, fresh, perfectly cooked cod and tasty, golden and melt-in-themouth chips. And the portions are generous too, making my cod and chips at PS4.80 great value.

But if fish is not your thing, there are plenty of other tasty offerings on the menu. The service is great too.

Cod and small chips PS4.80 YOUNGERS FISH AND CHIPS ? 73 Caerphilly Road, Birchgrove, Cardiff CF14 4AE - 029 2062 0678 YOUNGERS is widely regarded as one of the best fish and chip shops in the region - and rightly so - making them the deserved winner of the Fish and Chip category this year.

There is a huge choice on the menu - including monkfish - but it was a small cod and chips I went for. They were quite simply delicious and, with a generous helping of chips and a big piece of fish, great value at PS4.75.

The fish is cooked to order so it is piping hot and fresh. Light, crispy batter surrounds delicious white, chunky cod and the chips are golden, fluffy and super tasty.

There is seating if you want to eat in and the takeaway food comes in a cardboard box, making sure it all stays crispy. With great service, great choice and great food, it's hard to better (or batter!) Youngers.
