SOUTH FLORIDA AT&T MANAGERS AND OFFICIALS OF COMMUNICATIONS WORKERS OF AMERICA MEET TO JOINTLY SHAPE 'WORKPLACE OF THE FUTURE' CONCEPT

MIAMI, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T managers and officials of the Communications Workers of America from South Florida are among those meeting today in New Jersey to jointly shape the company's "Workplace of the Future" concept.
The conference, sponsored by AT&T and the CWA, is a key step toward redesigning the work environment to help AT&T meet the demands of the global marketplace while giving employees greater employement security and direct involvement in decisions affecting their jobs and working conditions.
U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, a long-time advocate of labor- management cooperation, is scheduled to be keynote speaker at a luncheon for more than 1,000 delegates to the company-union conference in Randolph, N.J.
"The 'Workplace of the Future' is a chance for unions and the company to work together in new and innovative ways to satisfy our customers and win in the marketplace against some very formidable competitors," said William Ketchum, AT&T vice president for labor relations.
CWA President Morton Bahr said: "It's now time for a new vision of the role of unions and companies, and the 'Workplace of the Future' can be a model for the entire nation. We share with AT&T the same desire for a healthy and competitive company that provides good-paying jobs today and creative job opportunities for the next generation."
Speakers at the day-long conference will discuss company and union perspectives of the "Workplace of the Future" and new processes and relationships required for mutual success.
The "Workplace of the Future" concept resulted from last year's bargaining agreement between AT&T, the CWA and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
