SONY TAKES TELEVISION TO THE HIGHEST POWER
WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE TRINITRON XBR LINE
PARK RIDGE, N.J., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Raising the performance standards of large-screen home entertainment, Sony is introducing a new line of premium televisions distinguished by dramatic picture quality, dynamic sound reproduction and advanced user interface. The new Sony Trinitron(R) XBR/2/(TM) line marks the introduction of the Super Trinitron picture tube -- the flattest screen in the consumer electronics industry -- available in two 32-inch and one 27-inch screen sizes. Complemented by a high fidelity audio package with detachable speakers for added flexibility in creating the desired home theater environment, the Trinitron XBR(2) line helps consumers realize the full potential of advanced video entertainment.
The KV-27XBR95S and KV-32XBR95S are designed as stand-alone units that offer high-quality audio and video capabilities. The KV-32XBR90S monitor optimizes video performance and is designed to serve as the centerpiece of home A/V integration. These units have been developed to maximize image reproduction of the newest generation of high-resolution video technologies such as laserdisc, Hi8(TM) video, S-Video, etc.
"We are taking consumer television to the highest power with the most significant television introduction in Sony history," says Jim Palumbo, senior vice president/general manager, Sony Consumer Television Products Company. "After many years of research and development, the Super Trinitron picture tube ushers in a new era of television technology complemented by an audio and feature package that will set the standards by which television is judged."
According to Palumbo, Sony chose to name the television line after its successful line of Trinitron XBR televisions. "Our Trinitron XBR line is widely recognized as the premiere line of consumer televisions. "The new units go even further to elevate the home entertainment viewing experience to new levels of consumer enjoyment; hence, the dawning of XBR(2) television."
Elements of the Super Trinitron Picture Tube
Delivering the flattest screen in the consumer television market, the Super Trinitron picture tube, vertically flat from top to bottom, offers a more dramatic theatrical presentation. Key features newly developed for the Super Trinitron picture tube include:
Superior Focus -- Detailed focusing from corner to corner is achieved by a new Superbrix(TM) Electron Gun that features a larger diameter focusing lens and longer focal length, delivering a 30 percent smaller beam spot size to provide more than 800 lines of horizontal resolution.
Greater Contrast -- Darker blacks, brilliant whites and vibrant colors jump off the screen via a new Deep Black Screen Coating that increases contrast by 70 percent.
Richer Color -- A broader color palette can be attained through Extended Range Phosphors that reproduce more vivid colors -- especially with high resolution VCR and laserdisc movies.
Brighter Picture -- With a luminance increase of more than 30 percent, the Super Trinitron tube contains a revolutionary Indium Cathode and Titanium Dioxide Layer combined to concentrate more light towards the viewer, for a brighter picture.
Picture quality is further enhanced by Digital/Intelligent Color Pure Filter Circuitry that analyzes the incoming signal and automatically selects the correct comb filter process for separating Y (luminance) from C (color) signals.
 Advanced User Interface
To customize the Trinitron XBR(2) television viewing experience, all three units offer a most extensive and user-friendly on-screen display system Power Window(TM), featuring cursor-controlled on-screen command fields that are superimposed in the picture and provide access to all of the television's features and controls. Program Palette(TM) A/V menu selector provides one-button pre-set adjustments to optimize video and audio settings for the type of program being viewed: movies, sports, news, music, and video games.
Program Palette functions include: movie for a theatrical audio effect; sports for recreating the images and audio excitement of a sports stadium; news for enhanced clear voice reproduction; music for live concert-hall sound simulation; game, for adjusting brightness and surround sound audio: language menu for selecting A/V Window readouts in English, French or Spanish; digital signal processing (DSP) menu for selecting Dolby Sound(R), SRS Sound Retrieval System in one of three simulated stereo soundfield audio environments; programmable channel block for blocking viewing of programs that may be deemed unsuitable for children.
 Life-like DSP Axis(TM) Sound System
Trinitron XBR(2) monitors/receivers are the first TVs to include Sony's advanced DSP (Digital Signal Processing) Axis Sound System that replicates a variety of soundfield environments from which viewers can choose, including jazz club, dance club, and live concert hall. The KV-27XBR95S and KV-32XBR95S offer Dual Axis(TM) Speaker Systems that combine woofer, dual tweeters, and tuned bass port in a large 8-litre enclosure to generate deep, powerful bass. The DSP Axis Sound System offers increased flexibility with detachable speakers that can be mounted for any application; onto the television; onto the wall, or onto a speaker stand.
 Advanced Digital Picture-In-Picture
Offered on the KV-27XBR95S and KV-32XBR95S Trinitron XBR(2) models, an advanced digital Picture-In-Picture feature adds a new dimension of enjoyment by making it possible to watch two different programs simultaneously. Two built-in TV tuners eliminate the need for a second input source to receive a second channel and gives consumers whole new ways to watch TV, such as: inset; split-screen; image swap; audio swap; position, digital memo (freezes on-screen images to store in the TV's memory), instant replay, and channel index.
 A Powerful Remote Commander(R) Control
To gain complete remote control, the KV-27XBR95S and KV-32XBRS95S provide a Programmable Rocker(TM) Remote Control that utilizes a newly- developed rocker control to move the cursor up and down in the on-screen Power Window command fields. It also operates most VCRs, laserdisc players, cable boxes and can learn to operate virtually any infrared- controlled video or audio component.
For total audio/video integration, the KV-32XBR90S offers one Integrated System Commander(TM) Remote Control to control all components in a home system. A convenient LCD screen highlights the functions available according to which component is chosen: TV; VCR; laserdisc player; amplifier, CD player; DAT recorder; cassette deck, or tuner. The Integrated System Commander Control even features a learning function for future-ready programming of virtually any infrared remote- controlled video or audio component.
Sony will support the launch of Trinitron XBR(2) television with an advertising campaign that will break in fall 1992. Trinitron XBR television will be sold initially through selected distribution consisting of Sony's premium XBR TV dealers.
The KV-27XBR95S, KV32XBR90S and KV-32XBR95S will be available this fall at suggested retail prices of $1,899, $2,299, and $2,599, respectively.
