SONY MAKES BOLD DESIGN STATEMENT WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE TRINITRON XBR2
 LINE OF CONSUMER TELEVISIONS
NEW YORK, Oct. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony is introducing its most advanced television -- both in design and technology -- with the Trinitron(R) XBR2, a new large-screen series that goes on sale Oct. 29.
The three Trinitron XBR2 TVs -- a pair of 32-inch models and a 27- inch screen size -- are elegantly designed sets that bring programming to life with advanced audio and video capabilities. The 27-inch unit (KV-27XBR95S) and the 32-inch unit (KV-32XBR95S) can stand alone or serve as the centerpiece of a home entertainment system. The other 32- inch set (KV-32XBR90S) is designed for use with audio components to create a customized audio/video system.
"Not only is the Trinitron XBR2 technologically superior to any television we have introduced, it is a bold design statement inside and out -- from the technology that delivers Sony's remarkable picture and sound quality to the attention to detail in the contours of the cabinet and the sueded finish," said Jim Palumbo, senior vice president/general manager, Sony Consumer Television Products Company. "The television is no longer a black box to be hidden. It is now an integral part of home design."
This new line couples the Super Trinitron(TM) picture tube -- the only vertically flat TV screen in the consumer electronics industry that provides an undistorted picture from any angle -- with Sony's Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Axis(TM) Sound System to provide stunning picture quality and realistic sound reproduction.
The Super Trinitron picture tube, the flattest in the industry, features a Deep Black Screen Coating that makes colors stand out, provides richer color for use with high-resolution VCR and laserdisc movies, and delivers a picture that is 30 percent brighter than conventional TVs.
The life-like DSP Axis Sound System replicates a variety of listening environments, ranging from a jazz club to a live concert hall. This system also offers design flexibility with detachable, Dual Axis(TM) Speakers that can be mounted onto a wall or placed on speaker stands without distorting the sound.
 User-Friendly On-Screen Commands
All three units offer a user-friendly, on-screen display system, Power Window(TM), that exhibits on-screen commands for access to all of the television's features. One special feature, Program Palette (TM), enhances the type of program being viewed. For example, select the movie function for sound similar to a movie theater or choose sports for recreating the excitement of watching a football game in the stadium. The programmable channel block function allows for blocking programs unsuitable for children. Other functions include news, music, game, language menu (English, French or Spanish), and a digital signal processing (DSP) menu for selecting Dolby Surround(R), Sound Retrieval System (SRS) in one of three simulated sound environments.
 Two Programs At Once
The KV-27XBR95S and KV-32XBR95S models have advanced digital Picture-in-Picture, making it possible to watch two different programs at once. This function gives consumers new ways of watching TV by offering a variety of options such as split-screen action, instant replay or inset viewing.
 Advanced Technology Remote Controls
No advanced television system would be complete without an easy-to- operate remote control unit. The KV-27XBR95S and KV-32XBR95S models have a Programmable Rocker(TM) Remote Control that in itself is specially designed. It allows the viewer to move the cursor up or down in the on-screen Power Window commands by using a rocker switch. The unit is ergonomically designed to fit easily in the contours of the hand. The KV-32XBR90S has one Integrated System Commander(TM) Remote Control to operate all of the components in a home entertainment system. A convenient LCD screen highlights the functions available based on which component is chosen (TV, VCR, laserdisc player, CD player, etc.) and a learning function for almost any infrared remote-controlled video or audio component.
 Consumer Availability
The XBR2 televisions will be available to consumers at retail on Oct. 29. The national introduction will be preceded by a unique "teaser" television advertising campaign and television commercials.
The KV-27XBR95S, KV-32XBR95S and KV-32XBR90S will be sold initially through selected Sony premium XBR dealers at suggested retail prices of $1,899, $2,299 and $2,599, respectively.
