SONY KIDS MUSIC SIGNS LANDMARK ENTERTAINMENT GROUP
TO PRODUCE 'CAMP CALIFORNIA' CHILDREN'S ALBUM
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Camp California, a licensing property based on the fun-in-the-sun lifestyle made popular by 30 years of music from The Beach Boys, has been signed to Sony Kids Music label for children's audio- and video- related product including records, tapes, compact discs and home videos. The Camp California characters serve as the official mascots of the perennially popular rock 'n' roll group The Beach Boys.
Landmark Entertainment Group, the international master licensing agent in all areas of franchise development for Camp California, will produce the first album through its in-house Music Division. The product will contain some of the classic Beach Boys' songs as well as new songs written especially for the characters.
Landmark's Music Division, under the direction of Vice President Ted King, has created music for the "Precious Moments" Christmas television special and video, "Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future" television show, the Masters of the Universe Power Tour, as well as music created for theme parks all around the world. Sony is planning to follow up the album with a video.
"We are thrilled to have Camp California on the Sony Kids Music roster and feel that Sony's powerhouse presence in the exploding children's music market will mean certain success for Camp California records and videos," states Deborah Wagnon, executive in charge of production for Landmark.
Camp California was created by Edward Garner and David Fontana in association with Tom Hulett and Mike Love of The Beach Boys. Well on its way to becoming a classic license for kids and adults around the world, Camp California continues to rack up licensing contracts.
In December, NEC Turbo Grafx 16 will release a CD Rom video game featuring all of the Camp California characters as a sequel to its 16-bit release "Yo Bro." Mighty Star will feature a stylin' line of plush characters at Toy Fair '93. For eats, Carl's Jr. ran a six- week promotion during summer '92 called "Camp California, Beach Patrol" in which a million premium items were given away. To keep cool, this summer Sun Sportswear introduced a line of boys active wear to Wal-Mart stores.
The Beach Boys Cafe recently opened in Hermosa Beach, Calif., and there are plans to open several other restaurants across America and in Japan. A "Camp California Kids Club" will soon be incorporated into the restaurant as well as other promotional tie-ins with the property.
Camp California has also shown an international appeal. Tsumura Pyxis International Co. Ltd. in Japan has committed to a multiyear program to purchase licensed Camp California product for the Japanese market.
The characters have been active with charities. Byron the Bear made his debut at the White House as the celebrity "spokesbear" for StarServe (Students Taking Action and Responsibility in Service), one of President Bush's most successful "Points of Light" programs. He appears on posters that reach schools across the country. In addition, the Camp California characters have gained recognition through a Borden's Beach Boys promotion to help the homeless and a Sun Safety Promotion with the American Cancer Society.
No newcomer to the licensing business, Landmark has developed concepts for clients that include Mattel Toys, Playskool Inc., Milton Bradley International, Precious Moments and Galoob Toys. "Camp California is multimedia concept and Landmark's plans include everything from television to tours to theme park attractions," states Jennifer Rogers, director/licensing and development for Landmark. "We believe that the combined expertise of Sony Kids Music, The Beach Boys and Landmark Entertainment Group is a winning combination that will continue to spread the 'Good Vibrations' to kids around the world."
