SONY INTRODUCES ENERGY STAR-COMPLIANT 17" TRINITRON MONITOR

BOSTON, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Electronics Inc. announced a high-resolution 17" Trinitron(R) computer monitor with microprocessor- based continuous scan capability, producing the consistently high quality images typically found only in single-scan video board/monitor systems. Designed for applications in imaging, engineering, design and desktop publishing, Sony's Multiscan 17se (GDM-17SE1) monitor incorporates Sony's top-of-the-line Trinitron cathode-ray tube (CRT). It also features a new power-management system that can automatically decrease power consumption when the monitor is not in continuous use.
Compatible with Macintosh(R), IBM clones and other personal computers, this high-performance display automatically adjusts image geometry and image distortion over a continuous range of video modes, ensuring a consistent level of performance from 640 x 480 to 1600 x 1200 resolution.
At the heart of this new Sony display system is a custom Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) that provides improved performance while reducing the number of serviceable parts by 50 percent compared to previous monitor designs. The ASIC-based system automatically adjusts all image geometry parameters -- such as keystone balance, pincushion balance and vertical and horizontal linearity. The ASIC-controlled Dynamic Focus(TM) feature ensures sharpness and clarity throughout the entire display area.
The Multiscan 17se's super high 76 Hz refresh rate at 1280 x 1024 resolution (non-interlaced), provides a virtually flicker-free picture. Overscan capabilities allow the monitor's visible display area to be expanded without distortion.
The Multiscan 17se features Sony's all-digital geometry control system, which automatically optimizes screen images for the leading PC and Macintosh display standards. Nine preset video settings automatically ensure top performance in the most popular video modes from VGA up to 1280 x 1024. The Multiscan 17se also allows users to define up to 11 custom settings based on frequently used modes.
The monitor complies with all Swedish MPR II safety standards for very low frequency (VLF) and extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic and electrical emissions. It also fully meets the EPA Energy Star and VESA guidelines for power management.
Sony's Multiscan 17se monitor will be available in fall 1993 from authorized computer dealers of Sony computer peripheral products. The monitor is packaged with a high-density cable, tilt/swivel stand and AC power cord. Optional adapters provide compatibility with the full line of Macintosh computers and have a suggested list price of $19.95.
