SONY CORPORATION OF AMERICA REALIGNS SALES AND MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS

PARK RIDGE, N.J., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Corporation of America (Sonam) will realign key business and support operations between its sales/marketing and manufacturing/R&D arms effective April 1. The announcement was made today by Sony Corporation Executive Deputy President Ken Iwaki, who continues as Sonam chairman and CEO.
"This move will effectively redistribute key responsibilities among the members of the management team for Sony's electronics business in the United States, following the recent appointment of Ron Sommer as president and COO of Sony Europe after serving for three years in the same capacity in the United States. This will enhance our drive to continue Sony's strong sales growth in this market," said Mr. Iwaki.
Sony Sales and Marketing of America (SSMA), responsible for sales and marketing functions across all consumer and professional product lines, including recording media, will be headed by Mr. Iwaki, who will serve as acting president, joined by John Briesch, named deputy president. Mr. Briesch will also continue as president of Sony's Consumer Products Group.
Sony Engineering and Manufacturing of America (SEMA), will continue with Kuni Ando as its president and COO, reporting to Mr. Iwaki. SEMA will now include all North American manufacturing facilities in eight locations for consumer televisions, professional and computer monitors, other computer peripheral devices, professional audio and video equipment, consumer loudspeakers, semiconductors, and recording media. The company also provides engineering support, sells factory automation equipment, and has 12 U.S. R&D operations.
"We intend to reinforce the integration of our team to maximize the expansion and enhance the efficiency of Sony's entire U.S. electronics business across all product categories," Mr. Iwaki said. "In support of these goals, SSMA and SEMA will assume total responsibility in their areas of specialization, while seeking the maximum degree of coordination between their respective functions."
Another key element in the realignment is the establishment of a position of chief financial and administrative officer to be filled by Sonam Executive Vice President Aki Nakamura. This new position will have corporate responsibility for finance, MIS, human resources and general affairs.
"We have filled Sony's U.S. management ranks with an excellent team of leaders from within our electronics organization, which I believe will prove vital to our continued success as we strive to maintain double-digit sales increases and enhanced profits in the challenging period that lies ahead," Mr. Iwaki said.
Sony's U.S. electronics operations will record double-digit sales growth for the ninth consecutive year at the conclusion the fiscal year ending March 31, 1993. Although the company does not break out income for the electronics group in the U.S., Mr. Iwaki said that the group is expected to sustain its profitability for fiscal 1993, despite the nation's slow economic recovery and a "relatively flat" consumer electronics industry. For fiscal 1992, Sony's U.S. electronics operations will have net sales of more than $6 billion, and more than 12,000 employees nationwide.
