BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony's "ES" series of ultra-fidelity audio components will be the major underwriter for the nationwide public radio broadcast of the 1993 Playboy Jazz Festival, it was announced today by Richard Rosenzweig, president, Playboy Jazz Festivals, and Marty Homlish, senior vice president and general manager of Sony's Audio Products Co.
For the second year, this 17-hour live satellite broadcast of the Playboy Jazz Festival from the Hollywood Bowl will be made available free of charge to all public radio stations coast-to-coast. The Playboy Jazz Festival will be held Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
As the official consumer electronics company for the festival, Sony participated in the Playboy Jazz Festival's annual series of free community jazz concerts throughout Southern California.
Included in its official designation is recognition of the ES series' Award for Musical Excellence program which recognizes exceptionally talented Juilliard music students who demonstrate extraordinary ability, commitment and promise.
Two of the 1993 ES series award winners, trumpeter Mark J. Inouye and clarinetist Samuel Karam, will perform as the opening act for the Saturday, June 12, Playboy Jazz Festival and the nationwide public radio broadcast of the festival.
According to Playboy's Rosenzweig, "Sony's participation in the 15th annual Playboy Jazz Festival marks the first time that a major international consumer electronics company has joined forces with us to support and promote America's only indigenous musical art form, jazz.
"We commend Sony for its ES Award for Musical Excellence program in association with one of the world's acknowledged leaders in musical education, and we look forward to a successful relationship with both Sony and Juilliard."
Sony Audio Products' senior vice president and general manager Homlish said, "We looked carefully for a program that would underscore our passion regarding excellence in music as a performing art. The Playboy Jazz Festival demonstrates that excellence, and we seized the public radio broadcast opportunity to bring the richness of the music, from both the seasoned artists and our young Juilliard winners, to many more people."
The Playboy Jazz Festival includes performances by more than 20 groups in jazz idioms ranging from big band to fusion to blues and Latin. This year's roster of performers includes such names as Wynton Marsalis, Mel Torme, Buddy Guy, Al Jarreau, McCoy Tyner, Patti Austin and Dr. John.
