SONOCO INTRODUCES NEW 25 PERCENT RECYCLED CONTENT BAG
 FEATURING GUARANTEED AUDIT TRAIL
HARTSVILLE, S.C., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonoco Products Company's (NASDAQ: SONO) High Density Film Products Division today unveiled the industry's first 25 percent post-consumer recycled content plastic bag with a guaranteed audit trail.
Called EnviroMate/RCB(TM), the new high density polyethylene bag for grocery and retail applications, is guaranteed to contain a minimum of 25 percent recycled post-consumer plastic bags and other plastic materials.
According to John Horton, Sonoco High Density Film Products Division vice president of sales and marketing, the EnviroMate/RCB meets or exceeds any state mandated recycled content guidelines currently in place and anticipates new requirements now being considered.
"The EnviroMate/RCB provides grocery and retail managers with a plastic bag that meets growing consumer expectations regarding solid waste and a recycled content guarantee that indemnifies and holds them harmless should the content be challenged," Horton said.
The EnviroMate/RCB is an extension of the in-store plastic bag recycling program launched by Sonoco in early 1990. Sonoco-sponsored plastic bag recycling programs, which are in place at over 8,000 stores nationwide, are providing a significant source of the post- consumer material being used in the EnviroMate/RCB bags. Horton said the remainder of the material is being obtained through a variety of sources.
According to Horton, the majority of the recycled content is recycled post-consumer plastic bags. The amount of post-consumer bags will increase as recycling and new sources of recycled bags become available. "The remainder of the post-consumer content is other plastics such as dry cleaning bags, newspaper delivery sleeves and produce bags," Horton said.
"Establishment of a plastic bag recycling infrastructure has been a significant part of our EnviroMate/RCB plan and we are committed to expanding the system," he said. Horton said Sonoco has enough post-consumer materials on hand and a sufficient supply stream to meet demand.
According to Horton, development of the EnviroMate/RCB began nearly nine months ago and has required some new processes and procedures beginning with raw material acquisition through finished product shipment.
The end result is a 21-step process and a corresponding Audit Trail which traces post-consumer material. The post-consumer content is analyzed daily and should the content level fall below the 25 percent rate, any bags or films produced after the last acceptable content verification are rejected for use as RCB bags.
According to Horton, the extensive Audit Trail has been designed to ensure retailers the EnviroMate/RCB bags will withstand the scrutiny of any content test. The guarantee provided by Sonoco says that "Sonoco agrees to indemnify and hold harmless customers from any losses or damages incurred should a regulatory audit determine that his product does not meet or exceed the advertised post-consumer content mix."
Horton believes this type of guarantee will become increasingly important as the post-consumer claims for various products escalate in the next few years.
