SONOCO FILES PATENT INFRINGEMENT SUITS

HARTSVILLE, S.C., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonoco Products Company (NASDAQ-NMS: SONO) announced today it has filed lawsuits against DURABAG Company, Inc. and Plasco Press Company, Inc., both California-based plastic bag manufacturers, for patent infringement of Sonoco's QuikMate(R) plastic bag system.
The lawsuits, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, involved a plastic bag loading system including a style of bags with holes in the handles and a supporting dispensing rack with horizontal arms. The system is widely used by supermarkets and other retailers.
In July, Sonoco announced it had reached settlements in similar patent infringement cases filed in U.S. District Court, Jacksonville, Fla. These cases involved a number of leading bag manufacturers and distributors. Terms of those settlements were not released.
Sonoco Products Company is an international manufacturer of packaging products with more than 250 operations employing 16,000 persons in 22 countries. The High Density Film Products Division is one of the largest U.S. producers of plastic bags and bagging systems for supermarkets and retailers.
