SONOCO BOARD DECLARES DIVIDEND, NOMINATES DIRECTOR

 HARTSVILLE, S.C., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Sonoco Products Company (NASDAQ-NMS: SONO) today declared a regular quarterly dividend of $.25 per share payable March 10 to shareholders of record Feb. 19.
 In other business, the board's nominating committee recommended four incumbent board members to new three-year terms and nominated Robert J. Brown of High Point, N.C., as a new director to fill the seat vacated by C. Kirkland Dunlap, Jr., who retired from the board in 1992 at the mandatory retirement age of 70. The current board members up for re-election include Charles J. Bradshaw, James L. Coker, Paul Fulton and Hugh L. McColl, Jr. Those five names will be included in the company's proxy statement that will be sent to shareholders in March.
 Robert J. Brown is chairman and chief executive officer of B&C Associates, Inc., a management consulting, marketing research and public relations firm headquartered in High Point. Brown is a native of North Carolina, attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Virginia Union University. He served as a police officer and as an agent with the U.S. Department of Treasury. He also served as special assistant to President Richard Nixon. Brown serves on the state board of directors of First Union National Bank of North Carolina and has been nominated to serve on First Union Corporation's board of directors. He serves on several college and foundation boards. He was the 1990 recipient of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Award.
 Paul J. Rizzo, a Sonoco board member since 1987, announced his resignation from the board to rejoin his former company, IBM. He felt he would not have adequate time to devote to outside boards. No replacement has been announced for this seat.
 Sonoco, an international manufacturer of packaging products for industrial and consumer markets, recently announced 1992 sales of $1.84 billion. The company employs approximately 15,000 persons at more that 250 plants in 22 countries.
