SONOCO AGREES TO PURCHASE INJECTION MOLDING COMPANY

HARTSVILLE, S.C., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonoco Products Company (NASDAQ-NMS: SONO) has signed a definitive letter of agreement to purchase Crellin Holding Inc., an international manufacturer, designer and marketer of injection molded products. The companies expect to complete the details of the sale in January. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"We are very excited to have the opportunity to purchase a company with Crellin's reputation in the plastics industry," said R.C. King, Jr., president and chief operating officer of Sonoco. Crellin's products serve such industries as textiles, automotive, fiber optic, wire and cable, plumbing, filtration, medical and diagnostic and food processing in the United States, Canada and Europe.
"In addition to the growth from Crellin's existing markets, several of our plastics production operations will benefit from the expertise in product design and process engineering that Crellin provides for injection molded plastics," said King.
Sonoco, an international manufacturer of packaging products for industrial and consumer markets, has an injection molding operation that includes a plant in South Carolina and a plant in Germany. Crellin, headquartered in Chatham, N.Y., has annual sales of more than $75 million and employs 800 people at nine plants in the United States and one in the Netherlands.
"We look forward to having the Crellin people join our Sonoco team. We know the combination of our two operations will provide significant benefits to customers in all the markets we serve," added King. "We think joining a company with the capabilities and strength of Sonoco will provide our customers and employees with the support we need to be the best injection molders in the business," said Michael Dranichak, president and CEO of Crellin.
The acquisition received antitrust clearance from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission for this proposed purchase on Dec. 29, 1992.
Sonoco, with $1.7 billion in sales, is one of the world's largest packaging companies, serving a wide variety of markets with carriers and containers. Sonoco has more than 15,000 employees in 250 plants around the world.
