SONAT ANNOUNCES EXPANSION OF SONAT MARKETING COMPANY ACTIVITIES

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonat Inc. (NYSE: SNT) today announced the expansion of Sonat Marketing Company activities.
Sonat Marketing is the leading natural gas marketer in the southeastern United States, with sales volumes of approximately 500 million cubic feet per day. Recently the Company began marketing all of the natural gas production of Sonat Exploration Company, which owns over one trillion cubic feet of proved natural gas reserves with an average daily production in excess of 400 million cubic feet per day. The consolidation of Sonat Inc.'s natural gas marketing activities under Sonat Marketing creates one of the largest natural gas marketers in the country with average marketed volumes approaching one billion cubic feet per day.
"We believe that this expansion enhances Sonat Marketing's ability to serve our existing customers in the Southeast and creates significant new opportunities for us to broaden our marketing activities to other major markets," said Larry Powell, president of Sonat Marketing. "Sonat Exploration Company is one of the largest independent natural gas producers in the United States and our customers benefit by gaining access to secure gas supplies under short-term and long-term arrangements."
In addition, on March 29, 1993, a Southern Natural Gas Company filing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) stated that after the implementation of FERC Order 636, Sonat Marketing will offer new sales services to customers on the Southern Natural system. Sonat Marketing will offer an array of services including long-term gas supplies, natural gas transportation arrangements and management of storage injections and withdrawals. Southern Natural, a Sonat company, will continue to sell gas purchased under existing supply contracts through its Supply Administration Department, consistent with the provisions of Order 636.
Sonat Marketing is a part of Sonat Energy Services Company, which manages Sonat's growing unregulated natural gas businesses. Sonat Energy Services also includes AES/Sonat Power, which is a joint venture formed in 1992 to construct, own and operate natural gas-fueled independent power projects in the United States, Canada and Mexico; Sonat Ventures, which is pursuing opportunities involving natural gas vehicles and packaged cogeneration; and Sonat Intrastate-Alabama Inc., a 460-mile intrastate natural gas pipeline.
Sonat, headquartered in Birmingham, Ala., is a worldwide energy company involved in natural gas transmission and marketing, oil and gas exploration and production, and offshore drilling.
