SOME 5,000 JOBS CREATED BY ITT SHERATON
 HOTEL PROJECTS IN NORTH AMERICA
BOSTON, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The 1,000 jobs that have been created by the opening of the Sheraton Chicago Hotel are among some 5,000 jobs that have been offered during the past 12 months as a result of ITT Sheraton Corporation's $1 billion expansion and upgrade of its hotels in North America and Hawaii.
Commenting on the much-publicized recruitment efforts that drew close to 10,000 applicants for the Sheraton Chicago, John Kapioltas, ITT Sheraton chairman, president and chief executive officer said, "We were overwhelmed by the public response to our employment announcement at the Sheraton Chicago, and regret that we were not able to offer employment opportunities to even more people.
"While the present state of our economy results in huge numbers of applicants for every opening, the fact that companies like ours are investing for the future by creating jobs during this recession provides a hopeful sign," Kapioltas said.
"This week's recruitment program at the new Sheraton in Chicago is but one of a number of locations where our renovation and construction projects have contributed to increased employment," he said.
In total, ITT Sheraton properties in North America and Hawaii are undergoing close to $1 billion of renovation, expansion and new construction to be completed this year. Some 3,000 hotel jobs and 1,700 construction jobs have been created as a result of these projects.
ITT Sheraton pointed out that just this past Wednesday, the reopening of the Sheraton Civic Center in Birmingham after a 12-month closure for renovation and expansion, created some 350 jobs in that Alabama city.
Other projects completed or in progress include The St. Regis in New York, with some 400 newly hired staffers; the Sheraton Palace in San Francisco, with 550 new employees; the Sheraton New York and Manhattan (formerly the Sheraton Centre and City Squire); and projects at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto, the Sheraton Bal Harbour in Miami; the Miramar Sheraton in Santa Monica and the Sheraton Princeville in Hawaii.
ITT Sheraton comprises 420 properties in 61 countries, and employs 100,000 employees worldwide. A subsidiary of ITT Corporation (NYSE: ITT), ITT Sheraton's operations include owned, managed, leased and franchised operations.
