 SOLECTRON OPENS JAPAN PROGRAM OFFICE; PROGRAM OFFICE TO SPEARHEAD SOLECTRON'S INTRODUCTION TO JAPANESE ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY
 MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Solectron Corp. (NYSE: SLR), a leading independent provider of integrated manufacturing services to electronic original equipment manufacturers, today announced that it has opened a program office in Japan. The office, located in Fujisawa, Japan, is organized as a Kabushiki Kaisha (KK).
 Dr. Ko Nishimura, Solectron's president and chief executive officer, made the following comments: "Over the past several years we have seen a number of Japanese industries shift production to manufacturing sites outside the Pacific Rim. As a result of this shift, Japanese electronic firms are looking for global manufacturing partners. Solectron Japan Inc.'s charter is to introduce Solectron and establish relationships with potential Japanese customers and suppliers. In addition, Solectron Japan Inc. will provide Solectron with information on manufacturing technology trends, new product directions and help Solectron develop a closer understanding of Japanese corporate strategies and culture."
 Solectron Japan Inc. will be headed by Keiichi Iwasaki. Iwasaki is president of Solectron Japan Inc. and a vice president of Solectron Corp. Prior to joining Solectron, Iwasaki was a 23-year veteran of IBM. At IBM, Iwasaki received an Outstanding Technical Achievement Award, and Asia Pacific Group Marketing Excellence Award and several IBM Japan Excellence Awards. His responsibilities with IBM included the management of engineering and manufacturing programs for peripheral products and components, which included hard disk files, components and glass panels.
 Solectron Japan Inc. will operate under the direction of Leslie Nishimura, president of Solectron Asia. Nishimura initiated the start- up of a production facility in Penang, Malaysia in June 1991. Solectron's Penang plant occupies 66,000 square feet and employs approximately 800 people. The facility offers surface mount assembly, flexible circuit assembly, system subassembly and packaging services.
 Solectron, founded in 1977, currently operates additional manufacturing facilities in Milpitas; Charlotte, N.C.; and Bordeaux, France. The company provides manufacturing services which primarily involve the assembly of electronics systems and subsystems using surface mount technology (SM)?, pin-through-hole design, prototype, materials management, software manufacturing, packaging, remanufacturing and test services.
 Solectron received the 1991 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and has accumulated a total of 43 quality and superior service awards from customers such as Apple Computer, Applied Materials, Conner Peripherals, Exabyte, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Sun Microsystems.
