SOLECTRON FRANCE OBTAINS ISO 9002 CERTIFICATION; BALDRIGE AWARD-WINNING COMPANY REGISTERS ITS QUALITY PROGRAM IN FRANCE

BORDEAUX, France, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Solectron France, S.A., a subsidiary of Solectron Corp. (NYSE: SLR), has received ISO 9002 certification from the Association Francaise pour l'Assurance de la Qualite (AFAQ) for its Bordeaux manufacturing facility.
Solectron, one of the largest electronics manufacturing specialists in the world, won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1991. The Bordeaux facility joins Solectron's ISO 9002-certified manufacturing operations in Dunfermline, Scotland.
"ISO 9002 certification is an important acknowledgment of our quality practices in France," said Jean-Marie Reilhac, Solectron's quality assurance manager in Bordeaux. "Augmenting the Baldrige Award criteria, which is based on the demonstration of quality to customers, ISO 9002 certification is a recognition of the discipline employed in Solectron's rigorous quality procedures. We believe that such certification is critical to maintaining our quality leadership position."
For ISO certification, a company must develop and implement a quality system, document the system, pass an on-site audit, and be approved by an independent auditing organization. The company must comply with specific requirements for its level of certification and type of quality system, pass periodic interim audits and be re-certified every three years. The ISO 9002 standard is for companies that manufacture and distribute products.
ISO certification is a must for companies that want to maintain or enhance their ability to compete in the European Community. Without certification, companies may be at a competitive disadvantage or be eliminated from lucrative markets. Over 40 countries have adopted the ISO standard.
"ISO certification of our Bordeaux operations brings key benefits to our customers in Europe," said Jean-Philippe Gallant, president of Solectron France. "It allows them to reduce or eliminate vendor surveys, saving them time and resources, and assures them that the components and products we produce for them have been manufactured according to the respected ISO standards for documentation, consistency and procedure. As an ISO certified facility, we can become a full partner in our customers' quality programs."
The Bordeaux facility joins Solectron's ISO certified manufacturing operations in Dunfermline, Scotland; Milpitas, Calif.; and Penang, Malaysia. ISO certification for Solectron's two remaining manufacturing locations (Everett, Wash., and Charlotte, N.C.) is expected in 1994.
