SOLECTRON COMPLETES PURCHASE OF PHILIPS' SCOTTISH CONTRACT ASSEMBLIES BUSINESS

MILPITAS, Calif., and LONDON, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Solectron Corp. (NYSE: SLR) and Philips Electronics UK Ltd. (NYSE: PHG), a wholly owned subsidiary of Philips Electronics N.V., today announced that Solectron Scotland Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Solectron Corp., has completed the purchase of the Philips Circuit Assemblies (PCA) business in Dunfermline, Scotland. In addition, Solectron Scotland will establish a manufacturing services operation at the former PCA site and provide turnkey services to leading electronic original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Ko Nishimura, president and chief executive officer of Solectron Corp., said, "This acquisition continues our strategy of offering electronic manufacturing services globally to major electronic OEMs. We entered the European marketplace a year ago with the establishment of a facility in Bordeaux, France. Our continued expansion is being fueled by the growing need to meet customer manufacturing and delivery needs on a worldwide basis, which is especially strong in Europe. Facilities in Scotland and France will allow Solectron to provide a broader set of regionally focused services in the growing European marketplace."
Over the past several years Solectron has worked closely with Locate In Scotland, the economic development agency for Scotland, and has received substantial assistance from this agency. In anticipation of continued business strength, this assistance has resulted in Solectron's plan to increase the workforce by as many as 300 people and make other capital investments over the next several years at their Scottish facility.
Lord Fraser of Carmyle, minister of state at the Scottish Office, commented, "This is marvelous news not only for the Dunfermline and Fife areas, but for the whole of Scotland, demonstrating our undoubted strength in the field of electronics. It reinforces once again the faith placed in Scotland by the international business community as a sound investment when geographic decisions are taken."
Solectron acquires a 140,000-square-foot, ISO 9002-qualified manufacturing plant with state-of-the-art surface mount printed circuit assembly capability.
David Pratt has accepted the position of managing director, Solectron Scotland Ltd., and will report to Charles Dickenson, president, Solectron Europe. Pratt was formerly the managing director of Philips Circuit Assemblies.
