SOFTWARE TOOLWORKS TO INTRODUCE GROUNDBREAKING MULTIMEDIA CD-ROMs, VIDEO FROM THE ENTIRE 20TH CENTURY; STRATEGIC ALLIANCE WITH CEL COMMUNICATIONS

NOVATO, Calif. Dec. 2 ~PRNewswire~ -- The Software Toolworks (NASDAQ: TWRX), a leading publisher of CD-ROM software, has announced it will offer a series of new multimedia CD-ROM products featuring video and film footage spanning significant events and people from the entire 20th Century, based on the largest interactive multimedia videodisc archive in the world.
The first in the series of new products resulting from the strategic alliance between The Software Toolworks and CEL Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: CELC) is planned by the Fall of 1993.
The products, for retail, OEM and education markets, will be based on CEL's archives including "The Video Encyclopedia of the 20th Century(R)," CEL's successful 83-hour interactive multimedia product sold to schools and libraries throughout the world.
Using motion video, sound, graphics and accompanying text, The Software Toolworks series is planned to include both an overview product providing an encyclopedic look at the 20th Century, as well as special editions focusing on particular topics of interest, such as War, Disasters, Politics, Space and Science.
"Access to quality content is one of the keys to success in the multimedia market of tomorrow," said Bob Lloyd, president of The Software Toolworks. "CEL's archives, along with their award-winning production team, give us this access, which will allow The Software Toolworks to continue as a leader in CD-ROM and multimedia software."
Each CD in the series will offer up to an hour of movie clips on key themes, such as history, sports and celebrity events, along with narrations, audio and hundreds of pages of reference material. For example, a section on U.S. Presidents could include videos of every president in the century, from McKinley's inauguration on. Sports could include great moments in baseball beginning with the 1916 World Series. The CEL archives include footage of wars, natural disasters, scientific breakthroughs -- virtually every subject, from every decade.
Martin Waldman, chairman of CEL added that "the alliance with Toolworks, with its technological and distribution strength, will allow CEL to expand past the educational market and into retail channels not previously available to us."
The Software Toolworks will develop the products and distribute them in the retail and OEM markets. CEL's Educational Resources Division will distribute the products in the K-12, higher educational and library markets.
The Software Toolworks Inc. publishes and distributes entertainment products for Sega(R) Genesis(R), Game Boy(TM), Nintendo Entertainment Systems(R) and Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems(R); entertainment and edutainment products on disk and CD-ROM for Macintosh(R) and IBM(R) PC and compatible platforms; and multimedia reference products for Macintosh and IBM platforms.
