SOFTWARE ETC. REPORTS DECEMBER SALES

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Software Etc. Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ: SFWR), the nation's largest software specialty retailer, reported sales for the five-week period ended Jan. 1, 1994 increased 11 percent from $51.8 million in the prior year to $57.5 million. Sales for the 11-month period ended Jan. 1, 1994 increased 21.5 percent, from $186.6 million to $226.7 million.
Comparable store sales declined 9.8 percent for the five-week period and increased two percent for the 11-month period.
Company President and CEO Dan DeMatteo said that while the company's sales performance in December was disappointing mainly due to the decline in the video game category, sales in PC product categories posted positive comp store gains, and were led by strong sales of CD ROM software and multimedia kits.
"Our sales performance should be viewed within the context of our banner year last year when comparable sales increased 21 percent for December," DeMatteo said. "We are pleased, however, that despite the decline in our video game category, our gross margins for the month have held and will be approximately the same as last year. Excessive markdowns in video game software were not necessary since we adjusted our ordering after carefully monitoring sales early in the holiday season," he said.
Software Etc. opened 68 new stores in 1993, up from 42 stores in 1992, bringing the total of company-owned stores to 331. Software Etc. stores stock broad assortments of home and office PC software, as well as video game software, and related products.
