 AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola's (NYSE: MOT) High Performance Microprocessor Division, together with Software Development Systems, Inc., (SDS) today announced Software Development Systems' SingleStep, a source-level debugger that runs under Microsoft Windows and debugs the entire Motorola 68000 Family of microprocessors. The SingleStep debugger contains a true Windows-based user interface, providing unprecedented ease of use and virtually eliminating the need for user documentation.
 SingleStep is available in two versions -- SingleStep Monitor Debugger and SingleStep Simulator. SingleStep Monitor Debugger debuggs programs running remotely in real-time on all 68000 Family targets. Debugging is as smooth and seamless as if the target program were running of the user's own PC. Because of the debugger requires no emulators or other support hardware, it reduces a users overall development costs. The SingleStep Simulator has the same "look and feel" as the SingleStep Monitor Debugger but it executes target programs without the use of target hardware. The Simulator achieves this by simulating the target processor directly on the host machine, thus allowing users to debug code long before target hardware becomes available. Because the SingleStep products share the same user interface, the user can switch between simulation and debugging effortlessly.

 A major SingleStep innovation is the Fast Access button bar, a set of buttons that allow the user to work with different types of program objects. The five Fast Access buttons are: Global, Local, Stack, Function and File. If the Function button is selected, for example, SingleStep displays a complete list of all C functions in the user's program. The user may then select any desired function, after which the debugger will display a set of operations that the user may perform upon the function. For functions, the operations are: display the function in the source window, set a breakpoint at the entry or return of the function, and compile or edit the file containing the function.
 SingleStep maintains an appearance through extensive use of pop-up menus. Each window has its own menu containing selections that are specific to that window. The pop-up menus remain hidden until they are needed, saving valuable screen space for the windows themselves. All debugger functions are organized into a logical, hierarchical system of menus and dialog boxes. A typical debugging session can be conducted entirely by selecting items from lists and menus, without any need for typing.
 SingleStep is available immediately as part of SDS's "Release 6.0." Current SDS customers are receiving SingleStep automatically as a replacement for the company's previous 68000 Family debugger, FreeForm. Both versions of SingleStep (monitor debugger and simulator) work with the output of SDS's CrossCode C compiler package, which contains a 68000 Family C compiler, C Library, assembler and linker.
 Price and Availability
 The SingleStep Monitor Debugger is available immediately under Windows, starting at $2,200 for a single-user license. A command-based version is available under SUN4/UNIX, starting at $2,880 for a floating single-user license. CrossCode C, which includes the SingleStep Simulator, is available immediately under MS-DOS, Windows and SUN4/UNIX starting at $2,000. All products come with a full year of technical support and a free upgrade to the next major release.
