SOCIETY CORPORATION ANNOUNCES A TWO-FOR-ONE STOCK SPLIT AND A 14.3 PERCENT COMMON STOCK DIVIDEND INCREASE

 CLEVELAND, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The board of directors of Society Corporation (NYSE: SCY) today announced a two-for-one common stock split and a 14.3 percent increase in the common stock dividend to shareholders of record March 2, 1993. The current quarterly rate is $0.49 per common share, or $0.245 per common share after giving effect to the two-for-one stock split. The new dividend rate will be $0.56 per common share, or $0.28 per common share after giving effect to the two-for-one stock split, and is payable on March 15, 1993 to shareholders of record March 2, 1993, with an ex-dividend date of Feb. 23, 1993. The two-for-one common stock split will be effective March 22, 1993.
 "This common stock dividend increase will make 1993 the 28th consecutive year that we have increased the dividend," said Robert W. Gillespie, chairman and chief executive officer. "The decision to declare a stock split and increase the dividend reflects strong operating performance in 1992, as well as confidence in the outlook for this year. The anticipated benefits from the Ameritrust acquisition last March are being realized and we felt our shareholders deserved to be rewarded for their continued support."
 As of Dec. 31, 1992, Society Corporation had $25 billion in assets, $1.9 billion in equity capital and more than 450 banking and trust offices in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Texas, Florida, New York, Colorado and Missouri. Based on the Dec. 31, 1992 closing stock price, Society Corporation had a market capitalization of some $3.75 billion. Through its affiliates, Society engages in commercial banking, consumer banking, mortgage banking, leasing and investment management and trust services.
