SOCIETY BANK FUNDS CULTURAL DIVERSITY PROGRAM AT
 WEATHERHEAD SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT
CLEVELAND, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Society National Bank has made a $750,000 gift to the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University to establish the Society Cultural Diversity Program.
"The Weatherhead School and Case Western Reserve University are committed to enhancing the diversity of this campus in all respects, in terms of students, faculty and curricula, as well as to contributing to a broader understanding of the management of culturally diverse organizations," said Weatherhead Dean Scott S. Cowen. The school already has developed a mission statement and a set of initiatives for promoting cultural diversity as an institutional priority.
The Weatherhead School and Society Bank envision the Cultural Diversity Program as a community resource and plan to work with community organizations on issues related to the program. The program will include educational components to address the needs of students and faculty at the Weatherhead School of Management. Among the program's components are:
-- Establishment of a Society Distinguished Faculty Fellowship, to be awarded to an outstanding minority faculty member whose research and teaching interests relate to multi-cultural issues in the workplace.
-- Field-based studies within regional organizations, which will allow Weatherhead faculty and students to study issues related to the management of the multi-cultural workplace and minority economic development.
-- The development of curriculum components that address multi- cultural management issues and the integration of these themes into the Weatherhead MBA program.
-- Executive education programs addressing various issues in the management of diversity.
-- Tuition assistance programs for talented minority MBA candidates at the Weatherhead School.
"We are most grateful to Society Bank for their part in establishing the Cultural Diversity Program at the Weatherhead School," Cowen said. "This is an area of critical importance for the management community as well as for the School, and we are very excited about creating a program in partnership with Society Bank that will serve as an example to business schools across the country."
"It is our hope that this program will assist faculty, students and employers in developing the skills of our region's human resources," said Robert W. Gillespie, chairman and chief executive officer of Society Corporation. "Addressing the needs of a culturally diverse population is a top priority at Society and has been for some time. By establishing the Society Cultural Diversity Program at the Weatherhead School, we are sending a message to our community that enhancing diversity and understanding the issues affecting multi- cultural organizations are essential to competing successfully in today's diverse marketplace."
