SNP black hole; RecordView.

AN INDEPENDENT Scotland would have been pounds 14billion in the red last year, according to the SNP government's own figures.

That sounds a lot - until you see the deficit for the whole of the UK.

In fact, the black hole in Scotland's finances wasn't quite as bad as the rest of Britain.

Not much in it, though, and one lesson from yesterday's annual figures was this - the UK is skint so an independent Scotland would be too.

What's more, Scotland would rely heavily on North Sea oil, which produced half the tax revenue last year as the year before.

The latest figures prove going it alone would be a massive risk and Alex Salmond's dream of turning our oil cash into a tidy nest egg are no more than a pipe dream.
