SMOKERS RESPOND POSITIVELY TO PROSTEP(R) NICOTINE PATCH DONATION; ASTHO ENCOURAGES INTERESTED SMOKERS TO LISTEN TO LOCAL MEDIA FOR DETAILS

WASHINGTON, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) today said they are very pleased by the positive consumer response to yesterday's announcement of a public- private partnership with Lederle Laboratories to provide two million ProStep nicotine patches, an aid to a comprehensive smoking cessation program, free of charge through state public health departments.
"We are extremely encouraged by the overwhelming interest expressed in this unique program by smokers across the country," said George Degnon, executive vice president of ASTHO. "We are working with Lederle and our state public health departments to make ProStep available as soon as possible."
The national ASTHO office will work with state public health affiliates in the upcoming weeks to finalize plans for distributing ProStep as part of a comprehensive behavioral smoking cessation program in all states that are
interested in the donation. Lederle

Laboratories is ready to ship ProStep to state public health departments as soon as ASTHO distribution plans are finalized.
ASTHO encourages smokers who are interested in participating in the program to watch and listen to their local media in upcoming weeks for information from their state public health departments about the specific timing and nature of the ASTHO community smoking cessation program in their area.
The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials is a national membership organization whose purpose is to formulate and influence, through collective action, the establishment of sound national public health policy and to assist and serve state health departments in the development and implementation of state programs and policies. The tobacco use prevention and control program is carried out by a network of contacts in each state department to promote clean indoor air policies, reduce youth access to tobacco products, and foster smoking cessation programs.
 NOTE:
-- Please consult full prescribing information for ProStep.
-- Patients could not smoke or use other nicotine-containing products during ProStep treatment. ProStep should not be used continuously for longer than three months. The effects of ProStep on fetal development are unknown. Therefore, pregnant or nursing smokers should be encouraged to attempt smoking cessation using educational and behavioral interventions before using pharmacological approaches. The benefits of nicotine replacement in cardiovascular or peripheral vascular disease should be carefully weighed against the risks. Since patients on concomitant medication may need dosage adjustment, it is important to ask patients if they are taking any other medications.
