SMOKENDERS PROGRAM TO HELP SMOKERS KICK HABIT REACHES 800,000 GRADUATES
NORWALK, Conn., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Smokenders, the world's oldest behavorial modification program to help smokers kick the tobacco habit, announced that 800,000 persons have successfully completed its course program to stop smoking.
Maurice "Tommy" Thompson, president of the highly effective Smokenders program, who is also a graduate, said Smokenders has established an enviable track record since it started 24 years ago in helping people rid themselves of the life-threatening effects of smoking.
"In reaching this 800,000 persons milestone, Smokenders has enabled more than 67 percent of its students to successfully kick the nicotene habit and stop smoking completely," Thompson said.
Many of the 800,000 Smokenders graduates are from the company's "Corporate Workplace Program," which includes a majority of America's leading Fortune 500 companies, as well as companies in Canada, Great Britain, Australia and Japan.
The Corporate program, which helps a company save from $1,000 to $4,600 per employee annually through lower insurance premiums and other costs, consists of a series of six weekly meetings of two hours each with participating employees at the workplace.
Thompson said there are some 50-million Americans who are addicted to nicotene from smoking and 90 percent of them have a desire to stop.
"We intend to make this program accessible to them in the battle to stamp out the addiction of smoking and increase America's collective lifespan," Thompson said.
The dynamics of the Smokenders program recognizes the complexity of smoking addiction and approaches the treatment from many, rather than one point of view, enabling the smoker to break the smoking habit and modify his or her behavior.
Behavorial modification is deeply entrenched in the Smokenders program, which is not based on shock treatment or hypnosis. The program does not prescribe or give any medication, acupuncture or shots, but stresses behavorial concepts to help each smoker deal with rationalizations, create self-awareness and improve self image.
Smokenders is nationally linked through a toll-free network at 1-800-243-5614.
