 Formerly Consumer Brands, New Name Reflects Focus
 on Science-Based Global Healthcare Products
 PITTSBURGH, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- SmithKline Beecham (NYSE: SBH) (SB) today renamed its Consumer Brands sector SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare (SBCH).
 SBCH will focus on science-based consumer healthcare, concentrating on the core businesses of over-the-counter medicines and oral and nutritional healthcare.
 Harry Groome, SBCH chairman, said: "The launch today of SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare marks the culmination of the strategy we set in 1989 at the time of the merger of SmithKline Beckman and Beecham. It also reflects our goal of becoming the world leader in consumer healthcare."
 At the time of the merger, SB's Consumer Brands business included cosmetic, perfume, toiletry, shampoo and other personal care and household products, he explained. "Although many of those brands were very successful, we decided to sell those that didn't reflect SmithKline Beecham's goal of leadership in healthcare."
 "Having successfully disposed of the brands that didn't fit our long-term strategy, having reorganized the way our business is managed, we are now in a strong position to concentrate resources and investment on our core healthcare businesses. In the future, we will focus on developing global brands aimed at the prevention and treatment of illness."
 Groome said SBCH's close relationship with SB's pharmaceutical and clinical laboratory operations gives the sector an important advantage in developing consumer products with added value, because they can be supported by substantial clinical date and technical expertise.
 Other steps toward bringing a global perspective to worldwide development of major healthcare brands have been a reorganization away from a regional structure into category management teams focusing on therapeutic product groups and the forging of stronger links between research and development and marketing to develop products with strong clinical support.
 Category management focuses on five therapeutic categories: gastrointestinal; upper respiratory tract; oral care; dermatologicals; and nutritional drinks.
 Over-The-Counter Medicines
 SBCH is an industry leader in over-the-counter medicines with brands such as Beechams Powders and Hot Remedies, Contac and Night Nurse cold treatments, Tums and Setlers antacids and Oxy acne treatment.
 In early 1994, SBCH said it expects to launch in the United Kingdom an over-the-counter version of Tagamet, one of the world's most widely prescribed medicines for gastrointestinal disorders. OTC Tagamet will be an advance over existing antacid products, because it suppresses production of the stomach acid that causes dyspepsia, rather than just controlling the symptoms.
 Other products in SBCH's pipeline of potential prescription to OTC switches include Nicorette and Nicoderm smoking cessation aids, and Bactroban, a topical antibiotic.
 Oral Healthcare
 SBCH's wide range of oral care products, including the Aquafresh, Macleans, Odol and Dr Best brands, has been enhanced by the addition of Corsodyl, a gum disease treatment with strong clinically proven results.
 Nutritional Healthcare
 In Nutritional Healthcare, SBCH has such products as Ribena, the vitamin C drink; Lucozade, which replaces energy; and Horlicks, the nutritional food drink.
