SMITHERS BEGINS NOISE, VIBRATION TESTING

 DETROIT, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Smithers Scientific Services Inc. announced here today that it has embarked on a new business venture to provide vehicle, tire and other manufacturers with a wide variety of acoustic and vibration tests in a hemi-anechoic testing chamber.
 Smithers is exhibiting the capabilities of its noise and vibration laboratory at the 1988 SAE International Congress and Exposition here this week.
 Located near Cleveland, the laboratory is fully equipped with twin 10-foot, floor-mounted roadwheels, along with on-site electronics, instrumentation, computers and data acquisition and analytical capabilities, The chamber can accommodate vehicles ranging from motorcycles to 18-wheeler tractor trucks.
 "We have the capabilities to conduct a full range of acoustic and vibration testing, with emphasis on tire and vehicle dynamics," said Douglas C. Domeck, president and COO of Smithers. He said tests can also be conducted on other stationary equipment where noise and vibration become a significant environmental and performance factor.
 Typical tests include complete noise and vibration analysis, modal analysis and FEA correlation, tire/vehicle transmissibility and uniformity, order analysis of rotating machinery, product noise evaluation and OSHA compliance.
