SMITHER JOINS STRUCTURED ANNUITIES AS CONSULTANT PITTSBURGH, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- A. John Smither, former
president and chief operating officer of the Pennsylvania Medical Society Liability Insurance Company (PMSLIC), has joined Structured Annuities as a consultant, it was announced today by David J. Hickey, vice president and chief operating officer of the Pittsburgh-based firm.
Smither has devoted his career to the insurance industry and is a pioneer in developing long-range solutions to the medical malpractice insurance problem in Pennsylvania. A former chief deputy insurance commissioner under Gov. William W. Scranton and, in 1968, acting Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner, he later helped to form the Pennsylvania Joint Underwriting Association. He assumed his post with PMSLIC in November 1978 and held it until retiring in August 1991. According to Hickey, Smither will work with the Structured Annuities staff to develop relationships with physician-owned medical malpractice insurance companies and will also focus on marketing the firm's capabilities in the Harrisburg, Pa., area. Structured Annuities is an international specialist in the use of periodic payments as a means of settling a wide range of tort liability and accident claims.
