SMITH CORONA ISSUES STATEMENT ON WALL STREET JOURNAL ARTICLE

SMITH CORONA ISSUES STATEMENT ON WALL STREET JOURNAL ARTICLE
NEW CANAAN, Conn., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- A story released by Dow Jones News Service Friday evening, Nov. 8 and carried in Monday's the Wall Street Journal, was incorrect, according to G. Lee Thompson, chairman and chief executive officer of Smith Corona Corporation.
"The story suggested that the Commerce Department ruling judged Brother Industries to be a domestic manufacturer and contradicted earlier commerce rulings. This was not the conclusion reached by the Commerce Department," Thompson said. "Commerce determined that Brother's U.S. operations was in fact a light assembly plant. However, the imported parts used in Brother's typewriters were not entirely from Japan so the finished product escaped antidumping law on a technicality.
"That was, and still is, the issue," Thompson said, "and we will continue to press our case to Congress."
