SMITH CORONA ANNOUNCES PERSONAL WORD PROCESSOR
 SOFTWARE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM
NEW CANAAN, Conn., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Smith Corona Corporation (NYSE: SCO) said it has found that under certain conditions software features of some models of its new personal word processor line, shipped since October 1991, are not meeting design specifications. To ensure that all customers are fully satisfied, the company announced a program to supply a replacement software chip to any customer dissatisfied with the performance of the personal word processor.
The company stated that, "We fully intend to take every step to satisfy our customers by offering to replace the affected software chip. The identified software problems can be resolved by a quick and easy exchange of a chip at Smith Corona Servicing Dealers and Authorized Service Centers throughout the country." The cost of this program is estimated to be $1.5 million to $2.0 million.
Smith Corona Corporation said that the replacement software chips are expected to be available after the first of the year. Additional shipments of the affected models will be delayed until the new chip is ready.
Shipments of the company's popular line of typewriters -- representing the majority of the company's sales -- as well as personal computers and other personal word processor models are not affected.
Smith Corona Corporation, based in New Canaan, is the world's largest manufacturer of portable electronic typewriters and personal word processors. The company also manufactures personal computers, office supplies and customized printed products.
