SMITH AND MILLAR ASSUME NEW ROLES AT MEAD

DAYTON, Ohio, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Mead Corporation (NYSE: MEA) announced today that P. Carter Smith, formerly president of Mead Packaging, has taken a new senior position within the company. In his new role as corporate vice president, Smith will coordinate the growth and on-going development of Mead's Coated Board System, which includes the company's packaging and coated board businesses, said Samuel S. Benedict, president and chief operating officer.
Ian W. Millar, formerly Mead's director of Corporate Strategy and Planning, was named to replace Smith as president of Mead Packaging.
In making the announcement, Benedict said, "For some time now, Carter has expressed his desire for a new role. He brings to this new position exceptional knowledge and years of expertise in the packaging industry. At the same time, Ian brings to Mead Packaging broad international business experience, outstanding strategic planning skills, and the leadership and energy to continue to grow that business. Together with Dennis Rediker, president of Mead Coated Board, this puts a formidable team in place to lead aggressive growth in our packaging and coated board businesses."
Millar, prior to joining Mead in 1990, was a senior manager with McKinsey & Company, Inc., an international consulting firm. He was responsible for addressing strategy, organization and operational issues for large corporations. He also has held division president-level positions in two engineering companies, both based in the United Kingdom.
Smith's 35-year career at Mead includes experience in paper, paperboard and packaging. Since 1981, he has served as president of Mead Packaging, the world's largest manufacturer of paperboard packaging for beer and soft drink industries and a supplier of multiple packaging systems to related industries worldwide. During his tenure, Mead Packaging established itself as a major international competitor, and significantly expanded and modernized its facilities worldwide to serve growing markets.
Smith, Millar and Rediker will report to Benedict.
