SMI GROUP INC. PLANT AT ROCK ISLAND, WASH. (FORMERLY SILICON METALTECH INC.) CHANGES IT'S NAME TO AMERICAN SILICON TECHNOLOGIES

ROCK ISLAND, Wash., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ken Peterson, majority owner of SMI Group Inc., today announced that the company's silicon manufacturing business in Rock Island, will immediately conduct its business under the name, "American Silicon Technologies."
"Our new name resulted from a contest we held among our employees," Peterson explained. "The name itself was selected in an election where all employees could vote for their choice among alternatives. This is a small example of the company's owners commitment to empowering the work force and treating its employees with dignity and respect."
Jim Trunzo, president of American Silicon Technologies, announced the payment of bonuses to permanent employees totaling over $100,000. "The last three years were traumatic for all of us and the new company wanted to do two things," Trunzo stated.
"First, we wanted to express our thanks to those who helped keep the business functioning throughout the prior owner's bankruptcy and second, we wanted to recognize and reward all those with valuable skills and experience who elected to come to work for the new company and make American Silicon Technologies a first class competitor in our markets."
Trunzo stated that Washington state government played a major role in the funding of the transaction, and provided many valuable services.
American Silicon Technologies is one of six producers of silicon metal in the United States, and accounts for about 10 percent of domestic production. The facility can produce 18,000 tons of high quality silicon metal for the aluminum and chemical industries. The company is affiliated with another company holding rights to an extensive deposit of high grade quartz in Canada and a research and development company perfecting an innovative process to manufacture pure silica.
"We plan to continue to provide our customer base with the same high level of service that they are accustomed to," Peterson commented, "and we intend to aggressively pursue new business as we improve and expand our facilities."
