SMERCONISH ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION FROM HUD

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael A. Smerconish today announced his resignation as regional administrator for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), effective Feb. 26.
Smerconish made the surprise announcement this morning while a guest on the "Paul W. Smith Program" at radio station WWDB (96.5 FM).
Smerconish said he is leaving the federal government to work as a trial lawyer with the Philadelphia firm of Beasley, Casey, Colleran, Erbstein, Thistle and Kline.
"I have greatly enjoyed my time as a public servant, and I will miss the daily interaction with individuals of diverse backgrounds and philosophies. Still, it is time to move on," Smerconish said.
Smerconish was appointed as HUD regional administrator on Aug. 11, 1991, by former Secretary Jack Kemp. Despite his status as a Bush Administration appointee, he has continued to serve in his position at the request of Democratic Philadelphia Mayor Edward Rendell. All other Bush Administration HUD appointees were separated from federal service Jan. 21, 1993, the day after President Clinton's inauguration.
Smerconish is the federal official responsible for the "takeovers" of both the Chester City and Philadelphia Housing Authorities.
As regional administrator, Smerconish oversees the $2.6 billion HUD program in the states of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
