FREMONT, Calif., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- SMART Modular Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMOD) today announced the addition of the Mini PCI card to its family of I/O communication products. The Mini PCI card offers the flexibility and compatibility of an internal data/fax modem and/or networking PCI card in a much smaller form factor at a reduced cost for notebook OEMs. Production units are expected to begin shipping this spring.

SMART's advanced design capabilities allow for the integration of multiple functions into a single Mini PCI form factor. This allows notebook OEMs to offer several configuration options to their customers, including V.90 Data/Fax modem, V.90 Data/Fax international modem or a soft modem.

SMART's Mini PCI card features a small form factor design for space-limited notebooks which contains a standard implementation of the PCI local bus specification that is currently used in desktop systems. The use of a standard form factor eliminates the need for custom design, creating a low-cost, faster time-to-market solution for the OEM industry, particularly notebook OEMs whose overall market revenue is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16.7% over the next 3 years.

For ease of integration and maximized performance, SMART's Mini PCI card is fully compatible with existing software drivers and applications that have been developed for standard PCI expansion slots, Windows(R) 98, Windows(R) 95 and Windows(R) NT and provides the latest ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) management features under Windows. The Mini PCI can also be configured at 5V or 3.3V.
