SKYTEL CORP. MARKS A TRIPLING IN NATIONWIDE COVERAGE; OSHKOSH ADDED TODAY

WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- SkyTel Corp., the country's leading provider of nationwide wireless messaging services, today announced that its ongoing program to add coverage in the United States has resulted in a tripling of coverage since January 1990. The SkyTel system now covers an estimated 95 percent of the U.S. business population including more than 11,000 cities and towns in 49 states, as well as geographic areas in Mexico and Canada, and vacation destinations such as Bermuda and the Bahamas. The tripling of coverage was celebrated today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Oshkosh, Wis., marking the addition of Oshkosh to the SkyTel System.
"We have tripled our coverage in less than four years, bringing new value to SkyTel subscribers with no increase in monthly prices. This continual building of U.S. coverage, plus international coverage and info services, has propelled SkyTel's unit growth to an annualized 44 percent in the most recent quarter," said SkyTel Corp. President David W. Garrison.
SkyTel Corp. bases its service coverage on the most frequent travel destinations in North America, as measured by the Official Airline Guides (OAG). The SkyTel System covers more than 90 percent of the most frequently traveled destinations, and expansion plans correlate directly to business travel patterns. This continued expansion is in response to requests from frequent business travelers.
At the ceremony today in Oshkosh, mayor Richard Wollangk said, "We are pleased to see that a city like Oshkosh fits into the development plans of an international network like skyTel. We're seeing more people making a work and lifestyle switch to communities like ours -- and it's important that we have the business services to meet their needs."
"We know where our customers want to be reached, where they go when they travel abroad and their favorite vacation spots," said Garrison. "And, unlike competing systems, there is no need to notify the SkyTel System where you will be traveling."
"Our customer is the frequent business traveler who routinely travels to sites where other businesses and business people are located -- small towns and big cities," said Garrison.
"Smart coverage, however, is only 'a ticket to play' in the nationwide messaging industry. Our customers look for smart information in messaging, not just numeric paging. That's why we have introduced text messaging and business information services like Reuters 'SkyNews,' news headline services and 'SkyQuote,' a personal stock price tracking service," added Garrison.
SkyTel service ranges for a suggested retail price of between $39 and $139 per month depending on type of service, number of units leased and regional, nationwide or international coverage selections. With the addition of Bismarck, N.D., SkyTel will provide coverage in all 50 states before the end of the year.
OAG is the world's foremost publisher of airline schedules, lodging and other travel-related information. OAG collects flight data from every scheduled airline in the world and distributes it to computer airline reservation systems, as well as other companies who serve the frequent traveler.
SkyTel Corp., based in Washington, D.C., is the principal subsidiary of mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: MTEL) and the leading nationwide wireless messaging company with 265,400 subscribers in the United States as of Sept. 30, 1993.
