SIZZLER INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES RESULTS

LOS ANGELES, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Sizzler International Inc. (NYSE: SZ) today announced that operating results for its fourth quarter (the 12-week period that ended April 30, 1993) will reflect a non- recurring charge of $4.9 million, or 10 cents per share after tax. This charge results from a major advertising and marketing initiative, along with costs arising from an isolated outbreak of food-borne illness at two franchised restaurants in Oregon several months ago. The company's financial results for the 12- and 52-week periods are expected to be released toward the beginning of July.
A total of $3 million will be used to support Sizzler's new family-centered programs. "We're very excited about our renewed family focus," said Richard P. Bermingham, president and chief executive officer. "According to our research, Sizzler does an excellent job of meeting the dining-out needs of families, and has a substantial opportunity to expand its sales by focusing on the family market."
Included in the $3 million of additional support is an investment in the immediate rollout of Sizzler's new "Just for Kids Bar(TM)." The "Kid's Bar" is an extension of Sizzler's famous salad bar, featuring kids' favorite foods like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fresh fruit, carrot and celery strips, chicken tenders and macaroni and cheese. The bar is being provided to all domestic company and franchised Sizzler restaurants.
"Test marketing of our new family program has produced outstanding results in terms of sales, profits and customer response," said Bermingham. "The `Kid's Bar' is a vital part of the family program, and we believe our investment in providing this unique merchandising tool to all of our restaurants will be well-rewarded in terms of incremental sales and profits."
Sizzler's new family program is being introduced nationwide on a market-by-market basis. The "Kid's Bars" will be in all domestic Sizzlers by the end of the summer.
Approximately $1.9 million of the non-recurring charge have been allocated for costs and other contingent expenses to investigate and resolve the Oregon matter. Bermingham said, "These efforts have helped to restore sales in Oregon."
Sizzler International Inc. operates or licenses 700 Sizzler restaurants worldwide, consisting of 278 company-operated, four joint- ventured and 418 franchised restaurants. In addition, the company operates 80 Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants in Queensland, Australia, and three Buffalo Ranch Steakhouses in the western United States.
