Byline: TIM JOHNSON

FOR a sixth successive year, Southport Swimming Club retained the Liverpool Echo Knockout Cup - receiving the trophy from special guest Fran Halsall, after storming to victory at Everton Park SC.

In a day for fingertip finishes and youngsters gaining valuable extra points by margins as slim as one hundredth of a second, the North Merseysiders clinched the trophy by eight points, from runners up Liverpool Penguins, with Crosby third.

The gala, which was contested by around 240 youngsters, remained in doubt until the final race, with over 400 excited spectators helping to produce a highly competitive atmosphere.

Among a host of fine individual performances four records were broken. Phoebe Lloyd-Hazlegreaves (Birkenhead) leading the way by smashing two - the girls 9 years 25m backstroke (18.59) and the 9 years 25m butterfly (17.26).

Emma Whittingham (Southport) was another to set a competition best, in the girls 9 years 25m freestyle (15.73), while her club set a new top time in the 8. x 25m freestyle relay (1.58.64). The Olympian Halsall was back at Everton Park for the first time since she won her world silver medal. She said "I can remember swimming in the Echo Cup between the age of 9 to 12 years for Ormskirk Otters and it was great. It was an event forwhich I was able to practise and fine-tune my skills. It is important that youngsters can work and train while enjoying racing and the challenge of competition." Francesca also took time to check the record sheet and was delighted to see that she still held six individual records. Plus she was part of a relay team that holds the girls 9 years 4 x 25m medley relay time. The result: 1st Southport 335, 2nd Liverpool Penguin 327, 3rd Crosby 192, 4th Ormskirk & District 191, 5th Birkenhead 183, 6th Garston 181, Hoylake 177, 8th Everton 171.
