BURBANK, Calif., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- 'Tis the season for Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert to take viewers on a half-hour tour of new high- tech home entertainment equipment and gift suggestions, including home videos covering hit movies, children's favorites, vintage videos and music on video and laserdisc in the "Siskel & Ebert Holiday Video Gift Guide."
In this popular, annual Christmas-themed show, Siskel & Ebert offer home video gift ideas on movies such as Danny DeVito's "Hoffa," Robert Redford's "A River Runs Through It," "Benny and Joon" and "Matinee."
Among Siskel's picks is "A River Runs Through It," which he says, "offers a sober vision of just how much a family can do for its members; sometimes they just each go their own way." He also likes "Matinee," a tribute to the '50s, B-grade thrillers. "If you know a movie nut in his or her 40s or 50s, this is the picture to get them. It will trigger big, nostalgic laughs," he adds.
Ebert selects "Hoffa," starring Jack Nicholson. "I gave the movie thumbs up," he says. "And I like the behind-the-scenes glimpse of the film DeVito has done on laserdisc. It's entertaining and educational."
Shopping for youngsters is made easy with Siskel and Ebert picking home video selections that include popular selections such as "Sesame Street's 25th Birthday: A Musical Celebration," "The Adventures of Huck Finn" and "Peter, Paul and Mommy, Too," a concert for children by Peter, Paul and Mary.
For children, Siskel especially likes "The Adventures of Huck Finn," which he says, "was an intelligent and very entertaining retelling of Mark Twain's classic story, starring Elijah Wood as Huck and Courtney B. Vance as Jim."
In music on video, Siskel recommends "Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration," while Ebert picks "Tina Turner: The Girl from Nutbush," a documentary about the life and career of this dynamic pop star.
The two critics offer a segment on collectibles and vintage videos, which are great moments from television and film history now available on home video. Picks include Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" and "Elvis in Hollywood" and "The Fugitive 30th Anniversary Twin Pack."
Ebert adds a true collector's item to his list, "Mickey Mouse: The Black and White Years, Volume One." "It includes 32 black-and-white Mickey Mouse cartoons, made between 1928, when Walt Disney released the first one, to 1935, when Mickey finally went to color," he said.
In the area of high-tech hardware, Siskel likes the Sony model TR101 Camcorder, which he used on a trip to China. He shows video of the trip, saying, "Here we take a trip through the bicycle-filled streets of Shanghai. I'm holding the camera with one hand outside our tour bus window -- look at the steadiness and quality of the imagery."
Ebert reviews a new piece of software on CD-ROM, called Microsoft Cinemania '94. "It's a multimedia movie reference for both IBM and Macintosh computers equipped with CD-ROM drives; it includes all 19,000 entries from Leonard Maltin's `Movie and Video Guide,' Pauline Kael's `5,001 Nights at the Movies,' Ephraim Katz's `Film Encyclopedia' and" adds Ebert, "Roger Ebert's `Video Companion.'"
