SIR CHRISTOPHER HOGG ELECTED TO SMITHKLINE BEECHAM BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 LONDON, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Sir Christopher Hogg, chairman of Courtaulds plc and chairman of Reuters Holdings PLC, has been appointed to the board by directors of SmithKline Beecham, it was announced today by SmithKline Beecham Chairman Henry Wendt.
 Sir Christopher, 56, joined Courtaulds in 1968. He was chief executive from 1979 to 1991 and has been chairman since 1980.
 He joined the board of Reuters in 1984 and was elected chairman in 1985.
 "Sir Christopher is a man of stature and accomplishment in many fields," said Wendt. "We are confident he will make very important contributions to the continued progress of SmithKline Beecham."
 Sir Christopher received his MA with first class honors from Trinity College, Oxford, and his MBA from Harvard University.
 On his return from Harvard in 1962, he worked for a year at IMEDE, a business school in Lausanne. He then spent three years with Philip Hill, Higginson Erlangers Ltd, followed by two years with the Industrial Reorganisation Corporation.
 A director of the Bank of England, Sir Christopher is a member of the International Council of J. P. Morgan and a member of the board of trustees of the Ford Foundation.
